Bonsai Project

Bonsai, that is, the sculpting of trees into miniature representations of their mature specimens, is an art form forged over generations in the Far East, nurtured by tradition, by repetition, by commitment and passion for their living, breathing, growing subjects.

RESEARCH SCOPE

This research project will focus on several specific areas:

Bonsai How-To
To explore the myriad of techniques, tools, and applications of both to the development of tiny trees.

Bonsai Practicum
Record of my efforts at developing bonsai, to include pictures, articles, and video productions.

BACKGROUND

Since an early age, I have been fascinated with the little, windswept trees that one would think are found only on the coastal shores of the Far East, but actually are discovered in tiny pots in backyard gardens.

I have dabbled in bonsai in the past to varied success. But, now in possession of a near endless supply of my own seedlings, naturally seeded each year by giant, 100+ year old Douglas Fir, Spruce, and Cedar trees, and living in a coastal area where things grow even laying out on the ground (because of the cool climate and near constant precipitation), I find myself prodded once again to take a stab at bonsai cultivation.

PROPOSED HYPOTHESIS

  • Bonsai are possible to grow and can be a profitable business venture.
