I’ve struggled with my weight for most of my adult life. As a teenager, I was tall and lanky, could eat whatever I wanted without even a second thought at putting on weight. Once I graduated high school, though, I was immersed in a high stress environment, and my response was to stress eat. Multiple that by four years and ready access to any kind of food I wanted (like three pizzas delivered for $10), and when I left the military, I weighed 240 lbs.
Over the next ten years, the stress of life continued in a variety of forms, and I self-medicated myself with favorite foods, often late at night, and in way too much excess. After a year of marriage, I woke up to find myself hitting 300 lbs, feeling awful, and no hope in sight.
I tried a few diets (Atkins, Exercise, etc) but nothing seemed to work. Luckily for me, though, my marriage was about to fail, and that removed almost 90% of the stresses in my life. Overnight, I felt 100% better. I took on a new job in a new town, but quickly found that, after a horrible marriage, my tolerance for new stress in my life was almost non-existent.
Fast forward to the present and today I find myself hovering around 274 lbs, with little to no stress in my life, and yet still unable to take the weight off. So, in this 3 Month Intensive, this is one of the challenges I plan to tackle. I want to, ultimately, get and maintain my weight under 190 lbs. I know (after much trial and error) that exercise is pretty much a waste of my time. It is the amount of food I eat, and the excess I continue to eat, mostly late at night. I don’t really stress eat anymore, though I still end up eating excessively for some unknown reason (maybe habit or addiction).
To deal with this, I have a few options:
- Read several weight-loss books during the first month.
- Read several self-help books focusing on habit changing the first month.
- If I do not have significant progress by the end of the first month, I plan to sign up for online therapy, so a professional can provide individualized counseling.
- By the end of the 3 Month Intensive, I want to be under 250 lbs.
