We had our third session for our Journey Family Bible Study on the 20th. There was an opportunity for us to dig into John again and answer some of the questions people had. I want to thank everyone who was able to join us and who pushed us with your great questions.
Here is a recap in case you missed it.
Discussion Questions:
We got through all of our discussion questions this session. Here is the recap with some answers.
1️⃣ Before watching the video, did you think the Bible was written mostly in one style or many different styles? Why?
One of the things we discussed is that many people approach the Bible as if it were a single book written in a single style. In reality, it is a collection of books written by different authors over many centuries. The Bible contains history, poetry, wisdom literature, prophecy, letters, gospel accounts, and apocalyptic writing. While all of it is God’s Word, not all of it communicates in the same way.
2️⃣ Why do you think it matters whether a passage is poetry, history, prophecy, or a letter?
We talked about how understanding the type of writing helps us understand what the author intended to communicate. We naturally read a poem differently from a newspaper article, and we should do the same with Scripture. Poetry often uses imagery and symbolism, while historical narratives generally describe real events. Recognizing the writing style helps us avoid misunderstanding the text.
3️⃣ Did the video change how you think about reading or understanding the Bible? If so, how?
One takeaway from the discussion was that reading the Bible is not just about reading words on a page. We also need to pay attention to how the author is communicating. Understanding the genre can help make difficult passages more sense and give us greater confidence when studying the Bible for ourselves.
4️⃣ Was there anything in the video that confused you, stood out to you, or made you think differently?
One idea that stood out was how many different writing styles God used to communicate His message. Even though the Bible contains many books, authors, and genres, it still tells one unified story that ultimately points to Jesus. We also recognized that some portions of Scripture can be challenging to understand at first, which is one reason it is helpful to study together and ask questions.
Optional Reading:
Read Along with Us:
We are reading through the book of John. This is part of our devotional, and we are officially finishing up with John 1-5 this week. Starting in June, we will be tackling John 6-10. I would encourage everyone reading this to join with us. Even if it’s years after this session recap was posted.
