Karii moved to Alaska to start fresh. She wanted a new life without her ex-boyfriend, without her old life from the lower 48 reminding her of all the things she’d done wrong.

The Dalton Highway seemed like the ticket. And, the money was really good, too. So, Karii struck out and headed for the top of the world. Before long, she was scheduled for her first solo run, due north, to the Lobo Mines.

But, just when she thought she had everything well in hand, a freak electrical problem with her truck strands her at a remote diner along the highway.

Things, though, quickly grow even worse. The strangers she meets, they are acting peculiar. As if they are all in on a secret that only she is not privy to.

What are they keeping from her? And, why are they acting so strange? Will Karii survive the night and get her semi truck working by morning? Or, does something much more sinister await for her beneath the Aurora?

“…The dashboard dimmed low, as if the batteries were somehow unable to supply enough current. The headlights were weak, but at least there was enough light to make out the edges of the road in front of her. The pain was back in her fingers as she obsessively gripped the steering wheel, ready to start braking and pull to the edge of the road if everything went black for good…” Quote from Seeking Light Aurora

The little boy, Derrick, seems friendly enough. His mother is sitting in the back booth of the diner, often stares out the window at the lights as they shimmer in the night skies.

The waitress, Peggy, seems very nice. So does the cook.

There’s a man sitting at the counter who doesn’t talk much, and another one at one of the booths who doesn’t talk at all. He seems rather irritated with her for some unknown reason.

What’s with these people?

For the first time, the thought crosses Karii’s mind. These people are up to nothing good. Why are they all acting so strange? All she wants to do is get her truck fixed and get the hell out of this place.

But, will they even let her leave?

What do you do when up is down and forward only ends up behind? When light is dark and night is day, and everyone around you seems hellbent on keeping you marooned in an abyss?

Karii didn’t want to find out.

But, as time passes us by, patterns begin to emerge. Behavior reveals true intentions, even if people try to cover them up.

What do you do if you are so helplessly lost, there is little chance of returning home? What would you do if the secrets people keep only mean your doom?

Do you run?

What if there is nowhere to run to?

“…Thomas opened the front door of the diner and leaned inside, holding himself up by the door frame. ‘What’s the matter?’ Terrance said, looking away from Peg and Carol. They were all huddled together at the counter.
‘Her truck is still freaking out. I’ll try to keep her busy for as long as I can, but I’m running out of ideas.’ He looked over at Derrick who was quietly sitting at the back booth reading one of his books. ‘You’ve got to keep her busy,” Terrance said. “We don’t have any other choice.’ ‘Look –’ Thomas hesitated. ‘This isn’t all on me you know. I’ve already told you. I don’t know jack shit about trucks or engines. I’m sure as hell not a mechanic.’ ‘It’ll be fine,’ Peg said. ‘We all know there’s nothing I can do to fix that truck.’ Thomas was shaking his head. ‘She’s going to figure out that something’s up. What if she starts asking questions?’ ‘Stall her,’ Terrance said. ‘We just have to keep her busy for a little while. Remember, whatever it takes’…” Quoted from Seeking Light Aurora

There can sometimes be a fate worse than death, where the very idea of going on seems grave and ominous. Yet, if all you know in life is fight or flight, if all you’ve ever known is turned upside down, then the lines between this reality and the next tend to blur beyond recognition.

Maybe there are things in this world that are just too intense, too life altering to even consider being real. But, real they are, nonetheless.

And that reality may just get you or someone else killed.
