In this session, we’re exploring what the Bible actually is. Before asking whether it is reliable or authoritative, it helps to understand what it was to those in the past, what it is to us in the present, and what it claims of itself.
Watch the short video, and spend some time thinking about the discussion questions below. Then come to the group discussion ready to discuss.
And bring any questions you might have, also.
Video: What is the Bible
Discussion Questions:
1️⃣ What stood out to you most in the video?
2️⃣ Before watching this, how would you have described the Bible? Did this video change that at all?
3️⃣ The video presents the Bible as a unified story. Does that idea make sense to you? Why or why not?
4️⃣ What questions does this raise for you?
Optional Reading:
Read Along with Us:
1️⃣ We are starting in John. We will post here where we are starting after each session, so if you would like to read together with us, that would be great.
Instructions on Reading:
1️⃣ Grab 3 highlighters that are different colors and assign these to one of those colors: What I agree with. What I disagree with. What I have questions about.
2️⃣ Pick a book in the Bible (does not really matter: if you’re new at it, we suggest John) and start reading. Read all the way through it, and as you are reading, any time something in the text qualifies for one of the three statements, highlight that section in the correct color.
3️⃣ As you work through each book (it does not really matter what order you read the books in. Just read each book in full before moving on to the next book), make a list of the verses you have a problem with, and a list of all of your questions you might have.
4️⃣ Bring your list(s) with you to the meeting so we can discuss them, or post them on the study home page so we can answer them or present them at the next meeting.
