The Journey – Session 5 – Recap

In our fourth Journey session, we stepped back from our verse-by-verse reading through the Gospel of John to look at the New Testament as a whole.

Rather than viewing the New Testament as twenty-seven separate books, we discussed how they fit together to tell one unified story centered on Jesus Christ.

Here is a recap in case you missed it.

Discussion Questions:

1️⃣ The video shows the Old Testament as one connected story rather than a collection of separate books. Did that surprise you? Why or why not?

One of the biggest takeaways from our discussion was realizing that the Old Testament is much more than a collection of individual stories. From creation in Genesis to the prophets, each book contributes to one unfolding story of God’s relationship with humanity. While each book has its own purpose and historical setting, together they point toward God’s plan of redemption that ultimately finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ.

2️⃣ As you watched the video, what part of the Old Testament story stood out to you the most, and what questions did it raise for you?

One theme that stood out was God’s faithfulness despite humanity’s repeated failure. Throughout the Old Testament, people continually rebel against God, yet He continues to pursue them, make promises, raise up leaders and prophets, and preserve His plan. This naturally raises important questions about God’s patience, justice, mercy, and how the promises made in the Old Testament connect to Jesus and the New Testament.

We broke the New Testament into its major sections:

  • The Gospels introduce us to the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
  • Acts records the beginning of the Church and the spread of the gospel after Jesus’ ascension.
  • The Letters (Epistles) explain what it means to live as followers of Christ and encourage believers in their faith.
  • Revelation points forward to the return of Christ, the final judgment, and the restoration of all things.

One of the biggest takeaways from the session was that every New Testament book finds its place within the same story. The Gospels answer the question, “Who is Jesus?” Acts asks, “What happened after Jesus returned to heaven?” The letters explain how Christians are to live, and Revelation reminds us that history is moving toward God’s promised conclusion.

We also spent time discussing where each of us fits into that story today. Some are just beginning to learn about Jesus. Others are following Him while continuing to grow. Others still are wrestling with difficult questions. Wherever we find ourselves, the invitation remains the same: continue reading, continue asking questions, and continue seeking the truth.

As always, thank you to everyone who participated. We look forward to continuing our journey together as we begin exploring the Old Testament in our next session.

Read Along with Us:

We are reading through the book of John. This is part of our devotional, and we are officially starting John 6-10. I would encourage everyone reading this to join with us. Even if it’s years after this session recap was posted.
