!! Isaac Hunter’s Online Echoes Book Club — Returning the Meadow by Isaac Hunter — August 2026 Wrap-Up !!

Alright!

Welcome to another month of Echoes Book Club!

Over the past few months, our little community has continued to grow. What began as Isaac Hunter’s Online Book Club has become Echoes Book Club, bringing together readers from both our online community and our local chapter in Reedsport, Oregon. Each month, we gather to explore stories that linger long after the final page has been turned, and this month brings us back to the world of the Meadow.

Our August selection is Returning the Meadow, the second novel in the Meadow Trilogy. If In the Meadow introduced us to the mystery, Returning the Meadow asks a different question: What happens after you’ve survived the impossible?

The answers are rarely simple.

The events of the first novel have left lasting scars, and the characters soon discover that escaping the Meadow was never the end of the story. Old wounds refuse to stay buried, new dangers begin to emerge, and the choices made in the past continue to shape the future in ways no one expected.

While the first novel centered on discovery, Returning the Meadow is ultimately about consequences. The mystery deepens, the emotional stakes become more personal, and the cost of confronting the truth grows even higher. Questions that once seemed impossible begin to find answers, but those answers come with difficult decisions that will shape everything that follows.

I’m looking forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts as we continue the journey together. Let’s dive back into the Meadow.

– End of Month Summary –

!! ISAAC HUNTER’s BOOK CLUB !!

What makes Returning the Meadow work is that it refuses to let the first novel stand alone.

Dawn survived the events of In the Meadow, but survival doesn’t mean the past is over. When an unexpected inheritance draws them back to Skagit River, they quickly discover that someone—or something—has been waiting for them. What begins as a chance to put their lives back together slowly reveals itself as a carefully orchestrated trap.

At its heart, Returning the Meadow is a story about consequences. Every choice made in the first novel echoes into the second. Old wounds are reopened, new mysteries emerge, and the characters begin to realize that some evils don’t simply disappear when you walk away.

Favorite Character

My favorite character is Erin.

Although she plays a relatively small role for much of the novel, Erin becomes the emotional heart of the story. She chooses something far more difficult than we would imagine, not knowing where she had been or why she was even there in the first place. Her compassion and willingness to help Dawn and Zack, despite everything she has suffered, make her one of the most memorable characters in the trilogy (I might be a little biased).

She reminds us that even in a story filled with darkness, redemption is still possible.

Most Impactful Moment

The moment that has stayed with me most comes in the final pages.

After everything Dawn and Zack endure, they believe they finally understand what has happened. Erin has returned, the immediate danger appears to have passed, and for a brief moment there is hope that the nightmare is over.

Then the final revelation changes everything for the reader.

The truth isn’t simply that Erin has been brought back and the evil hunting them destroyed under its own weight. Rather, a greater evil has won a war they didn’t even know they were fighting. There has been a profound change, and that transformation will mean everything going forward.

For me, that’s what makes the ending so unsettling. It doesn’t simply set up the third novel—it forces the reader to reconsider everything they thought they knew about the characters, and what lies ahead.

Comparison: Koontz, Saul, and the Meadow

While reading Returning the Meadow, I was reminded of the kind of supernatural suspense John Saul often wrote in novels such as Shadows. Like Saul, this story explores the idea that the past refuses to remain buried and that the actions of one generation continue to shape the next. The horror grows not from constant violence but from the realization that long-forgotten events are still influencing the present.

At the same time, Returning the Meadow shares something with what many say is Dean Koontz’s best work, The Bad Place. The supernatural mystery provides the framework, but the emotional core remains the relationships between the characters. Dawn’s determination to protect Zack—and Zack’s struggle to understand what is happening to him—matter just as much as the ghosts and the hidden place.

For me, that’s where the novel is strongest. The supernatural creates the danger, but it’s the love between a mother and her son that gives the story its heart.

“Okay, Mom,” Randy said.

“You behave yourself and be nice. You’re lucky to have company while you wait for the doctors.”

The woman turned and started back the way she came.

“The nurse said it would be twenty or thirty more minutes, so we’ll eat quick and be back up here before they take you in, okay?”

“Okay, mom.”

“Sorry for him,” the woman said to Katie as she walked by.

“He’s funny.”

Katie grinned.

As the woman left, Katie noticed the boy moving around again on the bed. Before she realized what was happening, the tiny lump disappeared and she could hear the faint sound of bare hands and feet on the tile floor.

He was low crawling under the beds toward her.

A moment later, Randy popped his head out from under the nearest hospital bed, craning his neck around to look up at her.

“Hello, there,” Katie said.

Randy disappeared back under the bed, the bed sheet draping down almost to the floor. Katie could still see three little fingers pressed to the tile.

“What are you here for?” Katie asked, readjusting her seat in the chair, trying to get the ache in her chest to lessen.

For whatever reason, the wheelchair was really uncomfortable.

“Why are – “

Randy’s voice trailed off for a moment as he looked around.

“Why are you here?”

“I’m getting my leg fixed,” Katie said. “See?”

Randy poked his head back out from under the bed and looked at the leg she was pointing to.

“What’s wrong with it?”

“The doctor said it’s broken,” Katie said. “Shattered.”

“Ouch.”

“Yeah. Ouch.”

“Can you feel it?” Randy asked, able to stay out from his hiding place.

“I can feel it, but it’s not too bad,” Katie said, then tapped the IV in her arm. “This thing is giving me medicine of some kind for the pain. At least that’s what the nurses said.”

“Why are you – “

Randy stopped mid-sentence.

He scooted out from under the bed entirely and slowly crept over to er on all fours.

“What are you, some kind of spider?” Katie asked, giggling a little.

“What are you?” Randy echoed.

He was now only about a foot away from her chair and sat there, his legs folded up under him, gawking up at her.

“What are you staring at me for?”

“I’ve never – “

Randy put out a hesitant hand and ever so gently touched her arm.

“Are you some kind of ghost?”

He looked around again.

“Are you – ”

He leaned in, talking in a whisper.

“Are you dead?”

A nurse came around the corner and stopped abruptly, spotting the empty bed in the far corner where Randy should have been.

“Randy Andrews,” the nurse said, her hands now on her hips. “You get right back into the bed and you stop playing around, please. They are ready for you in surgery.”

Katie watched as Randy scrambled on all fours under the beds and back up onto his, pulling the sheet back over top of himself again.

She started to ask him about his question, but couldn’t get the words out before his parents appeared at the door.

Katie sat there quietly, watching Randy stare back at her from under his sheet. She glanced over at his parents and the nurse, noticed Randy’s dad had no hair on the top of his head.

Are you dead?

What kind of question was that?

The snap of the wheel locks being disengaged on Randy’s hospital bed jarred Katie out of the confusion she was in.

The doctor she’d first seen was now at the door, waiting for Randy.

He was his surgeon.

They wheeled Randy out of the room, his parents following right behind, disappearing to the left, heading for his operating room.

The pre-op room was empty again.

Dead.

Are you dead?

What kind of crazy question was that?

The nurse came back through the double doors.

“It won’t be long now,” she said.

“Okay.”

Katie tried not to think about the dull ache growing just behind her sternum.

The nurse disappeared around the corner as Katie watched the double doors to the operating rooms slowly shut.

One response to “!! Isaac Hunter’s Online Echoes Book Club — Returning the Meadow by Isaac Hunter — August 2026 Wrap-Up !!”

  1. How did Returning the Meadow change your understanding of the events in the first novel?

    – When writing the book, I discovered that there was much more behind the meadow than what was revealed in the first book. It runs much deeper and the evil is more sinister than first thought.

What did you think of Erin’s role in the story? Did it surprise you?

    – It did surprise me that it ended the way it did for Erin. I did not know that going into the story.

At what point did you begin to suspect that something larger was happening than simply another haunting?

    – By the time I was nearing the end I knew that there was a shift happening and it was opening into a much larger story that would center around Zack.

What do you think the final revelation about Zack means for the final book in the trilogy?

    – The final book is the deciding factor of what will happen to Zack, if he will end up following in his father’s footsteps or if he will be able to resist the evil that has cursed him.

Which moment in the novel has stayed with you the longest since you finished reading?

    – The ending for me has stuck long after I finished writing the book. I don’t know why but there is something about the idea of escaping an immediate danger only to discover that you didn’t really escape at all.

What do you think?
