!! Isaac Hunter’s Online Book Club — In the Meadow by Isaac Hunter — June 2026 Wrap-Up !!

As we close out June, our little book club here on the internet has gotten a new name: Echoes Book Club. This month marks the official launch of Echoes as both an online community and an in-person book club. On June 24th, we met for the first time at our Reedsport chapter at the Lower Umpqua Library, joining our online members in exploring stories that leave a lasting impression long after the final page.

For our inaugural discussion, as you know, we turned to In the Meadow, the first book in my Meadow Series. And the Echoes launch at the Reedsport Library was a resounding success! We had a great discussion about books and our favorite characters. I look forward to next month’s meeting.

So, our story this month begins with one young woman and a miserable and boring life. She has no prospects. No career. No future. But then she is swept off her feet and whisked away to Washington State to a little town called Skagit River. There she is, starting a new life in her dreams. Until everything around her begins to unravel at the seams. What starts as a mystery gradually expands into something much more ominous.

The novel explores questions of grief, regret, second chances, and the cost of holding onto a life that is being threatened. As the story unfolds, Dawn begins to realize that comfort and truth are not always the same thing. The deeper she looks into the Meadow, the more she is forced to confront whether living in a beautiful illusion is worth sacrificing reality.

At its heart, In the Meadow is a story about loss and acceptance, and the fight to survive. Beneath the mystery and suspense is a deeper exploration of family, faith, redemption, and the difficult truth that moving forward often requires letting go of the things we love most.

So let’s walk through it.

– End of Month Summary –

!! ISAAC HUNTER’s BOOK CLUB !!

Final Thoughts:

What makes In the Meadow work is its combination of mystery and emotion. The story isn’t driven by monsters, violence, or shock value. Instead, it relies on uncertainty. Something is wrong. Dawn quickly learns it. The reader knows it even quicker. The tension comes from uncovering the truth while wondering whether the truth will ultimately be worth finding.

At its core, this is a story about letting go. About the temptation to remain in a comforting lie instead of facing a painful reality.

Favorite Character (End of Book):

I think I might be a little biased, but for me, my favorite character would be Dawn. What makes her compelling is her determination to keep searching even when every answer creates new problems. She could choose comfort instead of the truth. She could stop asking questions. Instead, she continues forward, even when the truth threatens everything she loves.

That persistence gives the story its emotional weight.

Most Impactful Moment:

For me, the moment in the entire book is the end. The very last scene. I won’t ruin it for anyone else in case you haven’t read it yet. But I can say this: Dawn finds her way, and in that, she must confront who she truly is and what she is willing to do to protect what is hers. Unfortunately, the cost is severe. In the last few lines of the story, the floor falls out from under our feet, and we are left reeling from what could be.

Comparison: Koontz, Herbert, and the Meadow

While reading In the Meadow, I found myself thinking about several novels that explore love as something powerful enough to transcend ordinary limitations.

The relationship between Paul and Dawn reminded me of Stefan and Laura in Lightning. In both stories, love becomes a driving force that pushes characters to make extraordinary sacrifices. The obstacles may be different, but the underlying commitment remains the same. These are characters willing to risk everything for the person they love.

I was also reminded of Mike and Midge from The Magic Cottage. Like In the Meadow, Herbert’s novel combines supernatural elements with a deeply emotional relationship at its center. The mystery matters, but what gives the story its weight is the bond between two people trying to hold onto something precious as forces beyond their control begin to intervene.

What connects all three novels is that the supernatural elements ultimately serve the relationships rather than the other way around. The mysteries, dangers, and impossible circumstances create tension, but the emotional core remains rooted in love, loss, sacrifice, and the question of how far someone would go for another person.

For me, that is where In the Meadow is at its strongest. Beneath the suspense and mystery is a story about devotion, grief, and the enduring hope that love can survive even the most impossible circumstances.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What stood out to you most about In the Meadow?
  2. Which character did you connect with most, and why?
  3. At what point did you realize the story was going somewhere very different from what you originally expected?
  4. If you were in the characters’ position, would you have wanted to know the truth about the Meadow, or would you rather have left it alone?
  5. What questions were you still thinking about after you finished the book?

!! NEXT MONTH’S BOOK SELECTION !!

The Vote is In.

July’s read will be Lightning by Dean Koontz.

One of my favorite Dean Koontz novels and a major influence on my own writing. Lightning is a supernatural suspense story filled with mystery, danger, unforgettable characters, and an unforgettable twist involving time travel.

“Okay, Mom,” Randy said.

“You behave yourself and be nice. You’re lucky to have company while you wait for the doctors.”

The woman turned and started back the way she came.

“The nurse said it would be twenty or thirty more minutes, so we’ll eat quick and be back up here before they take you in, okay?”

“Okay, mom.”

“Sorry for him,” the woman said to Katie as she walked by.

“He’s funny.”

Katie grinned.

As the woman left, Katie noticed the boy moving around again on the bed. Before she realized what was happening, the tiny lump disappeared and she could hear the faint sound of bare hands and feet on the tile floor.

He was low crawling under the beds toward her.

A moment later, Randy popped his head out from under the nearest hospital bed, craning his neck around to look up at her.

“Hello, there,” Katie said.

Randy disappeared back under the bed, the bed sheet draping down almost to the floor. Katie could still see three little fingers pressed to the tile.

“What are you here for?” Katie asked, readjusting her seat in the chair, trying to get the ache in her chest to lessen.

For whatever reason, the wheelchair was really uncomfortable.

“Why are – “

Randy’s voice trailed off for a moment as he looked around.

“Why are you here?”

“I’m getting my leg fixed,” Katie said. “See?”

Randy poked his head back out from under the bed and looked at the leg she was pointing to.

“What’s wrong with it?”

“The doctor said it’s broken,” Katie said. “Shattered.”

“Ouch.”

“Yeah. Ouch.”

“Can you feel it?” Randy asked, able to stay out from his hiding place.

“I can feel it, but it’s not too bad,” Katie said, then tapped the IV in her arm. “This thing is giving me medicine of some kind for the pain. At least that’s what the nurses said.”

“Why are you – “

Randy stopped mid-sentence.

He scooted out from under the bed entirely and slowly crept over to er on all fours.

“What are you, some kind of spider?” Katie asked, giggling a little.

“What are you?” Randy echoed.

He was now only about a foot away from her chair and sat there, his legs folded up under him, gawking up at her.

“What are you staring at me for?”

“I’ve never – “

Randy put out a hesitant hand and ever so gently touched her arm.

“Are you some kind of ghost?”

He looked around again.

“Are you – ”

He leaned in, talking in a whisper.

“Are you dead?”

A nurse came around the corner and stopped abruptly, spotting the empty bed in the far corner where Randy should have been.

“Randy Andrews,” the nurse said, her hands now on her hips. “You get right back into the bed and you stop playing around, please. They are ready for you in surgery.”

Katie watched as Randy scrambled on all fours under the beds and back up onto his, pulling the sheet back over top of himself again.

She started to ask him about his question, but couldn’t get the words out before his parents appeared at the door.

Katie sat there quietly, watching Randy stare back at her from under his sheet. She glanced over at his parents and the nurse, noticed Randy’s dad had no hair on the top of his head.

Are you dead?

What kind of question was that?

The snap of the wheel locks being disengaged on Randy’s hospital bed jarred Katie out of the confusion she was in.

The doctor she’d first seen was now at the door, waiting for Randy.

He was his surgeon.

They wheeled Randy out of the room, his parents following right behind, disappearing to the left, heading for his operating room.

The pre-op room was empty again.

Dead.

Are you dead?

What kind of crazy question was that?

The nurse came back through the double doors.

“It won’t be long now,” she said.

“Okay.”

Katie tried not to think about the dull ache growing just behind her sternum.

The nurse disappeared around the corner as Katie watched the double doors to the operating rooms slowly shut.
