Alright!
As we close out July, Echoes Book Club has officially completed its second full month under its new name. What began as Isaac Hunter’s Online Book Club is now growing into a community with both online readers and local chapters. After the successful launch of our Reedsport chapter at the Lower Umpqua Library in June, we gathered again this month for another evening of great discussion, thoughtful insights, and plenty of conversation about books.
Our July selection was Lightning by Dean Koontz.
For many readers, Lightning begins as a mystery. A mysterious stranger appears at pivotal moments throughout Laura Shane’s life, saving her from danger before disappearing just as quickly as he arrived. Who is he? Why is he protecting her? And how does he always seem to know exactly when she needs him?
As the novel unfolds, those questions lead to something far larger than the reader initially expects. Yet despite its unforgettable premise, what has always stood out to me is the story’s heart. Beneath the suspense and mystery is a deeply human novel about loyalty, sacrifice, courage, and the enduring power of love in the face of impossible circumstances.
It’s one of the reasons Lightning has remained one of my favorite novels for so many years. Dean Koontz combines a high-concept idea with characters who feel genuine, making the emotional journey every bit as compelling as the mystery itself.
Now, let’s take a closer look at the novel and discuss what made Lightning such a memorable read.
– End of Month Summary –
!! ISAAC HUNTER’s BOOK CLUB !!
Final Thoughts:
What makes Lightning such an enduring novel is the balance Dean Koontz strikes between a fascinating premise and deeply human characters. The mystery is compelling, and the suspense rarely lets up, but neither ever overshadows the people at the center of the story.
At its core, Lightning is about loyalty, sacrifice, and the enduring power of love. As the answers gradually come into focus, the novel becomes less about solving a mystery and more about the lengths people are willing to go to in order to protect those they love.
Favorite Character (End of Book):
Without question, my favorite character is Stephan.
He remains one of my favorite fictional characters of all time because of his quiet courage and unwavering devotion. Nearly every decision he makes is shaped by a willingness to sacrifice his own future for someone else’s. He never seeks recognition or reward. He simply continues doing what he believes is right, regardless of the cost.
For me, Stephan is the emotional center of the novel.
Most Impactful Moment:
The most impactful moment comes near the end of the novel, when all of the seemingly unrelated events finally come together.
Without spoiling anything, it’s one of those rare endings that doesn’t simply explain the mystery—it reframes everything that came before it. Looking back, you realize how carefully Koontz constructed the story from the very beginning. It’s satisfying both emotionally and intellectually, which is one of the reasons Lightning has stayed with me for so many years. Walking away from the last page, this read just reconfirmed what I already knew about Lightning. In the end, it is a love story.
Comparison: Koontz, Niffenegger, and the Meadow
One of the reasons I wanted Echoes to read Lightning is because it represents many of the qualities I value most in fiction.
Like The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, Lightning places a deeply committed relationship at the heart of an extraordinary premise. Both novels use the impossible—not simply as a source of suspense—but as a way to explore sacrifice, devotion, and whether love can endure despite forces beyond human control.
It’s also a novel that has influenced my own writing. Readers familiar with In the Meadow will probably recognize a similar emphasis on ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances, where the emotional journey is just as important as the mystery itself.
In all three novels, the speculative elements serve the characters rather than overshadowing them. The suspense draws you through the story, but the relationships are what make the books memorable long after you’ve finished reading.
Discussion Questions:
- What aspect of Lightning surprised you the most?
- Which character did you connect with the most, and why?
- Did your opinion of Stephan change as the story progressed?
- What do you think makes Lightning continue to resonate with readers decades after it was first published?
- If this were your first Dean Koontz novel, would you read another? Why or why not?

!! NEXT MONTH’s BOOK SELECTION !!
At our next Echoes Book Club meeting in Reedsport on Wednesday, July 29th, 2026, we will vote on the next book to read. There has already been interest in continuing with the Meadow Series by reading book 2. So that book is on the list along with two other selections.
- Returning the Meadow — Isaac Hunter
- The Book Thief — Markus Zusak
- The Measure — Nikki Erlick
The winning book will become August’s official Echoes Book Club selection.
Whether you plan to join us in Reedsport or participate online, we hope you’ll read along with us and join the conversation.

!! IF YOU LIKE THIS BOOK, YOU WILL LOVE OUR DAUGHTER !!

If this month’s read resonated with you—if you’re drawn to stories that explore darkness, tension, and what people become under pressure—you may find something similar in my work.
Check out this excerpt from my novel, Our Daughter:
“Okay, Mom,” Randy said.
“You behave yourself and be nice. You’re lucky to have company while you wait for the doctors.”
The woman turned and started back the way she came.
“The nurse said it would be twenty or thirty more minutes, so we’ll eat quick and be back up here before they take you in, okay?”
“Okay, mom.”
“Sorry for him,” the woman said to Katie as she walked by.
“He’s funny.”
Katie grinned.
As the woman left, Katie noticed the boy moving around again on the bed. Before she realized what was happening, the tiny lump disappeared and she could hear the faint sound of bare hands and feet on the tile floor.
He was low crawling under the beds toward her.
A moment later, Randy popped his head out from under the nearest hospital bed, craning his neck around to look up at her.
“Hello, there,” Katie said.
Randy disappeared back under the bed, the bed sheet draping down almost to the floor. Katie could still see three little fingers pressed to the tile.
“What are you here for?” Katie asked, readjusting her seat in the chair, trying to get the ache in her chest to lessen.
For whatever reason, the wheelchair was really uncomfortable.
“Why are – “
Randy’s voice trailed off for a moment as he looked around.
“Why are you here?”
“I’m getting my leg fixed,” Katie said. “See?”
Randy poked his head back out from under the bed and looked at the leg she was pointing to.
“What’s wrong with it?”
“The doctor said it’s broken,” Katie said. “Shattered.”
“Ouch.”
“Yeah. Ouch.”
“Can you feel it?” Randy asked, able to stay out from his hiding place.
“I can feel it, but it’s not too bad,” Katie said, then tapped the IV in her arm. “This thing is giving me medicine of some kind for the pain. At least that’s what the nurses said.”
“Why are you – “
Randy stopped mid-sentence.
He scooted out from under the bed entirely and slowly crept over to er on all fours.
“What are you, some kind of spider?” Katie asked, giggling a little.
“What are you?” Randy echoed.
He was now only about a foot away from her chair and sat there, his legs folded up under him, gawking up at her.
“What are you staring at me for?”
“I’ve never – “
Randy put out a hesitant hand and ever so gently touched her arm.
“Are you some kind of ghost?”
He looked around again.
“Are you – ”
He leaned in, talking in a whisper.
“Are you dead?”
A nurse came around the corner and stopped abruptly, spotting the empty bed in the far corner where Randy should have been.
“Randy Andrews,” the nurse said, her hands now on her hips. “You get right back into the bed and you stop playing around, please. They are ready for you in surgery.”
Katie watched as Randy scrambled on all fours under the beds and back up onto his, pulling the sheet back over top of himself again.
She started to ask him about his question, but couldn’t get the words out before his parents appeared at the door.
Katie sat there quietly, watching Randy stare back at her from under his sheet. She glanced over at his parents and the nurse, noticed Randy’s dad had no hair on the top of his head.
Are you dead?
What kind of question was that?
The snap of the wheel locks being disengaged on Randy’s hospital bed jarred Katie out of the confusion she was in.
The doctor she’d first seen was now at the door, waiting for Randy.
He was his surgeon.
They wheeled Randy out of the room, his parents following right behind, disappearing to the left, heading for his operating room.
The pre-op room was empty again.
Dead.
Are you dead?
What kind of crazy question was that?
The nurse came back through the double doors.
“It won’t be long now,” she said.
“Okay.”
Katie tried not to think about the dull ache growing just behind her sternum.
The nurse disappeared around the corner as Katie watched the double doors to the operating rooms slowly shut.
